Q & A from Sun's Worldwide Education and Research Conference

Every year, Sun Microsystems, Inc. held its global Ministry of Education and Research (wwerc) meeting convened thought leaders in education and technology. Campus Technology participated in a press conference, in this years wwerc in San Francisco and asked Sun chairman Scott McNealy (left), vice president of global education and shed light onÌØÀû(right), the two issues of interest Higher Education. (Photo courtesy of Sun Microsystems, Inc.) CT: I am very interested in your conversation in the keynote how Sun handles patent trolls. What is your advice to the open-source community how to answer the challenges of intellectual property rights? Scott McNealy: I think the best way to resist it is to make open-source a compensation strategy rear. We [Sun] work very hard and spent a lot of money and then open the source code. We know who the mother, father is every line of code - we have kennels papers! We have to have technology, we have a complete set of files for each line of source code, we write, so when we put an end to the law in court before a judge, we can say, "No, we do not have pulled Crack that well-off, the prior art here, where people write¡¡ "Then, we also have the ability, if we NetApp in the positive, we can go back in their 14 with K. It has not, as long as we fundamentally speaking, defensively, "Every step of your product, a big chunk of our intellectual property rights." This is expected to warn that the future Troll, perhaps it is best not to, we have. We have 5.5 billion US dollars in cash reserves, if a 881 counterparts, we have. People can safely share our surrounding the open-source community, knowing that does not exist in any WTO illegal activities, and all the rest of the it.now what we can do, but where? Dell harder, but it is still superior to guarantee revenue, you are going to pay on proprietary technology - not only are the tax to use it, but withdraw from the barrier. Therefore, open-source, no compensation, I still think it is higher than that of proprietary code, but the tapping of compensation, is the best in the world now. There is a huge campus can be done without taking any risk approach - Just take a look at all communities, we are driving compensation, and J ava and S olaris and S PARC and N etBeans and M ySQL and all the rest. Certainly, we can reduce most of the 881 IP risk, but not the only reason.

CT performance: What is your idea of the preservation and use of digital repositories, as well as your hope for the preservation and archiving of special interest groups [Sun pasig]? Shed light onÌØÀû: pasig actually initiated at this meeting, a year ago, when Stanford was Maikekaile from Pasquinelli and art from the sun and aware, we have this incredible breadth of technology , and Sun as a company can bring. The volume content of a production on an annual basis, just amazing, and with the breadth of technology - disk, tape, computer systems and software glue - us, we know, and librarians know, we [Sun: can bring some solutions, there is no other company can.
